The Economic Burden of Injury in Canada

Date:
September 24, 2009
Organizer:
SMARTRISK

SMARTRISK is pleased to present The Economic Burden of Injury in Canada, which builds on and expands from the original 1998 economic burden study, The Economic Burden of Unintentional Injury in Canada. Injury costs Canadians $19.8 billion annually – more than $600 for each man, woman and child in the country. In fact, injury – from falls, traffic, drowning, suicide, violence and other means – remains the leading cause of death for Canadians aged one to 44, taking the lives of 13,667 people in 2004. This presentation will aid injury practitioners, policy makers, and researchers in using this report to make a case for injury prevention.

Philip Groff is the Director of Research & Evaluation for SMARTRISK. Phil is responsible for the expansion of research capacity both internally and externally in injury prevention. He has a Ph.D. in psychology. He has been a course instructor at the University of Toronto, psychology department, a researcher at the Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit and a researcher at the Canadian Policy Research Network.
